>> Monday, February 11, 2008

It is the first day of Chinese New Year and we headed to Rotterdam after school as there is a Chinatown there. The return train ticket costs 3 euros.

The port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe and was the world's busiest port from 1962 to 2004, until it was overtaken by Shanghai.

The reason why Rotterdam looks so much different from other Dutch cities is due to World War 2. The heart of the city was almost completely destroyed by the German Luftwaffe, and 800 people were killed, while about 80,000 others were made homeless. Rotterdam was meant as an example, as Germany threatened to bomb a number of other Dutch cities. Therefore the Dutch government decided to capitulate rather than suffer multiple repeats of the casualties at Rotterdam. Extracted from Wikipedia.
