Another 21st Birthday=No $$

>> Sunday, February 27, 2005

Saturday, went to Shirley's house to celebrate her 21st birthday. Edwin fetched most of us from amk mrt and we arrived at around 6.30 pm. There was quite a lot of people in her house by then and we went into her room as Meibin and Ade are inside. Sat there for a while before we went outside to eat. Cutting of the cake was next and something funny happened. When Meibin was taking photo of Shirley and her family members, her hair got too near the candles on the altar and it caught fire for a short moment. Derrick saw a bit of smoke as he was standing next to her and exclaimed loudly "Your hair!!!". Everyone looked at meibin and was stunned by what had happened. Her mother quickly brushed off the burnt hair and brought her to the sink to wash her hair. We all asked her whether she is ok or not and she said she is completely fine. Luckily, only a bit of the hair is burnt and there is no hole or anything obviously different about her hair. However, the smell of the burnt hair is rather strong and quite suffocating. Most of us didn't know that hair is so smelly when it is burnt. Anyway, the smell dissipated after 15 mins. We took a group photo as well.

After eating the cake, most of us took individual photos with Shirley outside her flat. Went back to her room after a short while as it was rather humid outside. We were chatting about everything under the sun from uni life, driving license, ghostly encounters, movies, soccer, etc. Shirley's sister had to use her room for a while and all of us shifted to the smaller living room where we watched Guess, Guess, Guess from 10 pm to 11 pm. We took a last group photo before we left as well.

Edwin and Derrick fetched some gals back home while the rest of us went Yishun to watch Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events. Had supper after the movie and went back home.

Sunday, went out with Weiming to have a movie marathon as there are quite a lot of Oscar nominated shows that we haven't watched yet. We watched Closer and Ray at cineleisure. Still got Million Dollar Baby, Sideways and Team America: World Police left to watch.

Went out with jiayun to sing ktv on thur at lot 1. I had never been to cck k-box before and the tv was rather small compared to other outlets. We sang all the way from 11 am to 2 pm. The difference here is that we got chased out at 2 pm sharp whereas other outlets like cineleisure would normally chase people at around 2.30 pm. I think that it is because cck is a neighbourhood shopping centre and that many students are inclined to sing ktv as there is a promotion of $6 per pax from 2 pm to 7 pm for students. Thus, there is higher demand for afternoon sessions at cck compared to orchard which has much lesser schools in the vicinity. Had lunch after 2 pm and went home for a short while before arranging to meet liyuan at jurong east to apply for jobs at another job agency. The job agency is Recruit Express at JTC which is one of the better known companies. We left promptly after we submitted our application forms as i had to rush to meet 2 of my secondary school friends at Habourfront as we are going to Joanne's 21st birthday at Costa Sands Sentosa. Took 176 from jurong east and transferred to 188 before reaching habourfront. The 3 of us were wandering around in Habourfront shopping centre looking for present as we haven't bought yet. We visited mostly shops selling female accessories and finally decided on a bag and a set of necklace and a pair of earrings. We were all quite hungry by then and boarded the bus to Sentosa. Met Anna and Clara, our secondary school friends as well on the bus. I had totally no clue of the way to go but luckily some of them knew what bus to take and where to alight. We had to walk quite a distance from the bus stop to the rather deserted resort. We were invited to a restaurant and saw some familiar faces over there. Helped ourselves to the catered dishes on the table and took a photo after our meal.

There was a BBQ after our dinner and most of us just sat down on the chairs, lazy to barbeque as we were mostly not hungry. Cutting of the birthday cake was next and Joanne was busy taking photos with each group of her friends.

Clement and Chin Wan decided to take the initiative to barbeque some food for us. We sat down eating and chatting for some time when we noticed that most of them had gone back to the apartment. We decided to check out the arcade near the lobby as we didn't have much to do. Played a game of table soccer as it was the only game which everyone could be involved. Went up to her apartment and was really amazed by the incredibly small size of the apartment. There wasn't room for the 6 of us to squeeze in and we just waited outisde the apartment for those who went toilet. Bid farewell to her after that as none of us intended to stay over in that crammed apartment. As we were walking along a deserted road to the bus stop, i suddenly remembered that i could show them the scary pictures i took at lim chu kang. Showed them the picture with a lot of orbs and zoomed into the photo to show the eyes and mouth of each individual orb. The gals were mostly freaked out but the guys examined each orb closely on my digicam. I was rather excited to describe my ghostly experiences to them. Went to Habourfront hawker centre to grab a bite before heading home.

Took a total of 9 bus rides on thursday and i was not pleased to think about the amount of money spent of transport. Have to get a job soon!

Went out with Hwor Chen and Kang Rui today to watch Howl's Moving Castle. It is a really magical and fascinating japanese animation. Walked to PS after that to have our dinner. Left for home after wandering among the shops. Overslept on the bus and ended up near Bukit Panjang. Had to take another bus back home.

Jinxed

Went out with my platoon mates to Pulau Ubin to cycle on monday. We went to Changi Village to eat breakfast and headed to the ferry terminal for a boat ride to Pulau Ubin. The turnout today was less than the sentosa outing as some people had matters to attend to. Anyhow, 11 people turned up. We took a $2 boat ride there and headed to the shops renting bicycles. Kok Sheng was the experienced guide in Ubin and he took the lead in choosing the shop to rent bicycles. Some of us took off on our bikes immediately and we cycled around 400m to find out that some people did not follow us. We went back to a large open space near the shops and found out that Kelvin did not know how to cycle. He had a phobia of cycling after a bad fall when he was still young. All of us were giving him tips on cycling but they were not very useful as learning cycling requires practical lessons but not theory lessons. Most of us were chatting along the road while some were teaching Kelvin and balancing his bike as he was not able to cycle safely yet. Junchen suggested that some of us go cycle for a while since too many people teaching would be useless. The 5 or 6 of us then proceeded to cycle for around 15-20 mins before coming back to join them. It was extremely tiring to cycle up some slopes but when we made a u-turn to go back, the feeling is really shiok as we were moving down the slopes at top speed without having to paddle and the wind was especially cooling in the super hot weather.

Joined the rest and Kelvin had made significant improvements in his cycling skills although he fell a few times. The whole lot of us were off in a short while and we cycled to a place near the coast with a barren hill of soil beside us. Left promptly after a gust of wind blew sand and dust all over us. We took Kok Sheng's lead and cycled along the route planned by him. Reached a shop selling cold canned drinks and we stopped to take a break. Our legs are rather tired already as most of us haven't exercised for sometime. After our water break, we rested at a shed to wait for Kelvin and some others to come. We sat down on the benches and informed the slower pack about the shop selling cold drink in front. We were about to move off from our resting place when i felt a sudden urge to disturb jiekai. I went behind him and pressed on his shoulder until he was nearing lying down on the bench he was sitting on. As a retaliatory action, he swung his jungle hat at me and swiped my glasses accidentally to the ground. I was shocked by his sudden movement and picked up my glasses. Too my dismay, a part of my frameless lens have chipped off. When i showed Jiekai, he thought that it was a drop of water on my lens but realised it was not. I took off on my bike immediately as i was really pissed and i didn't know what to do. I was overwhelmed with regret, anger and pain eminating from my wallet. I was racing to numb my emotions but stopped when i reached the main pack. Jiekai was apologising to me but i was ignoring him. My face was completely black and i did not want to talk to anyone. When he apologised to me again, i told him that it was useless apologising. Ks had lead us into a trail in the jungle and we were climbing our way up after leaving our bikes in a secluded area covered by trees. He brought us to an opening where we can see the view of a quarry filled with water and the islands around Pulau Ubin including Singapore. The view was great and we stayed for less than a minute before heading up another trail. It led us to the top of the hill and we were treated with a paranomic view of the whole area. My face was still really glum and Ks immediately asked why are my lips "tu tu". I showed him my specs and he exclaimed asking me what happened. Some others also asked me what's wrong as my facial expression is rather expressive. We took some photos using my camera with the amazing scenery in the background. I really felt like jumping down into quarry at that moment. I asked Hwor Chen if anyone were to fall down, will the person survive? He said no immediately and explained that the person will land on the steep rocky slope before ending up in the water. I discarded my idea of jumping down promptly. I remember that when i lost my wallet in secondary 3, i was so desperate in anguish and anger that i nearly wanted to jump off the building. I had more than $40 in my wallet at that time and it was considered quite a lot at my age. It was fortunately reported lost and all the cash were intact. I guess i was really lucky then. I guess no one knew about my mild suicidal tendencies.

Ok back to the topic, we took quite a lot of photos at the hilltop. After that, we walked all the way down to where our bikes were stationed and began cycling again. We cycled for some time before reaching a steep slope where most of us pushed our bikes up. Following that, we continued our journey until we reached a temple. We parked our bikes there as it was a dead end and Kelvin went to the temple to pray. Liyuan, Keng Han and i followed suit since we are just outside the temple. We left the place shortly and cycled back to where we came from. Kok Sheng and Jiekai warned us that we need to brake as we approached the steep slope. I didn't really take the advice seriously until i realised that my bike is a bit unstable as it was going really fast. I squeezed the brake handlebars and it was going smoothly until i tried to cycle. The speed was too fast for the oscillations of my legs and my feet lost control of the peddles. I jammed the brakes as i was worried that i'll lose control of my bike. My rear wheel swung upwards and my body was pushed to the front. I quickly released my hands from the handlebars and hopped over the front wheel. The bike crashed behind me and i was unscathed, thanks to my long legs. It was really quite a dangerous accident but i was lucky that i did not fall down. Daryl and Junchen who were behind me witnessed the accident and stopped to ask me whether i was ok. Junjie thought that he caused my accident as he was braking in front of me but he was quite far from me. Got back on and peddled away, trying to catch up with the front pack which consists of Kok Sheng, Jiekai, Paul, Daryl and Hwor Chen. I saw the same cold drinks stall and was suprised that the 5 of them did not stop for a water break in this hot and sunny weather. I parked my bike there and bought a bottle of 100 plus. The rest who were behind me followed suit and we had a rather long break drinking and chatting until Hwor Chen called me and asked of our whereabouts as they had been waiting for some time for us to catch up. We caught up with them after around 5 mins and headed to a place near the jetty to discuss whether we are staying for a longer period of time or go back to Changi Village and have lunch. We decided on the latter as most people were tired, sweaty and hungry at that point of time. Returned our bikes and walked to the jetty where we took a few groups photos. Took the ferry back to mainland and went Changi Village to eat lunch. Did not get anything from Jiekai as i was hoping maybe a free drink from him in return for my disfigured specs. Nothing of that sort even though i teased him earlier that he will be treating me for lunch. Anyway, i had gotten over it and all i can blame is my bad luck with Jiekai. He caused my slipper to "drown" when we kayaked at East Coast and now my specs. Anyway, there is no use complaining now, i can only think that maybe i owed him in his previous life. Headed for home after our lunch.

Tuesday, went out with my family members in the afternoon to the temple and decided to go to Wiraka Showroom and office, which sells pool and billard tables. My family, or rather my sis and i have been wanting to get a pool table the moment we shifted into our new house. We planned to get a 9 feet pool table as my living room is really large and a pool table would fit nicely in it. We had a rather hard time finding the place as it was at Eunos Ave 7 and we thought it was near Eunos mrt and we went around the area to look for it. When we couldn't find it, we realised that it was actually near Paya Lebar mrt instead. The traffic there was really horrible as there were a lot of vehicles on the road and there are road diversions due to the construction of Kallang/Paya Lebar Expressway. My condolences to those taking lessons at Comfort Driving Centre. We finally found the location after several U-turns and careful scanning. The staff introduced us to many different types of pool tables but my sis and i had already picked one, which is the Max Diner Pool that can be converted into a dining table as well. It was a pricey $2800 with all the accessories and delivery charges included. After we picked the type of pool table, we can choose the colour of the cloth and the material & colour of the table itself. My mum insisted on green cloth as she said that seeing green is good for the eyes but i persuaded her to choose for the blue-green cloth as it looked more modern. We all agreed on matt mahogany for the table material as scratches would not be too visible if there were to be any in the future. We had to wait for around a month as there was no stock of any Max Diner 9 ft pool table. I felt the pinch as GST was not included and an additional $140 is going to be charged. That adds up to nearly $3000 for a pool table which is quite a waste of money.

We left after giving a downpayment of $500. Headed to Bedok to have our dinner and my mum shopped for fruits and groceries after that. Went back to our old hdb flat to help my father pack some stuff as there was still quite a lot of things in there. It was hot and stuffy there without any fans or chairs to sit down. Went back home with quite a lot of our old stuff.

Wednesday, went swimming with Kok Sheng in the morning at Safra Mt Faber. The facilities are brand new and we also do not need to pay to use the swimming pool. There was also not much of a crowd in the pool and we have the freedom to swim around without avoiding or dodging poeple. Tried the jacuzzi by the side of the pool for a while too. Left at around 1.15 pm and the changing room was like that of wild wild wet. It was like we were in a country club, but as a matter of fact, we are. Too bad our membership ends when we ord. Went to the hawker centre opposite to have our lunch and i was eating halfway until i felt something hard in my mouth. I pulled out expecting a bone but it was actually a staple. If it was a nail or something bigger, i would have definitely complained. Headed to Ikea after our lunch as Ks needed to buy cd racks and a plastic bag dispenser.

Met up with Liyuan at Jurong East after that to register at some job agencies there. We went to a job agency that he knew of and were told to register online without the need of going there. I felt a bit stupid but we continued to find other job agencies in the building. Found another one in the building and we filled in the application form for temp jobs. They said that they will contact us if there are any temp jobs available. Went to a building beside it to look for more job agencies and found quite a lot from the companies directory at the ground floor. Went to each job agency to fill in the application form and before we knew it, it was 6 pm. Went to Ck departmental store and ntuc to buy some stuff. The pasa malam was next and i bought two t shirts while liyuan bought one. Headed home after that.

Learnt driving on thursday and friday and completed my final evaluation. I was able to book my driving test and booked it on 18 mar 7.25 am to 8.55 am. I was considering other slots as the time is too early and there will be a lot of cars in the early morning. Found a 15 mar slot with the same time but eventually booked a slot on 22 mar as the time is much better.

Went out with my secondary classmates, Jieli, Shilei, Weiting and Kiang Peng for a farewell lunch in Marche Heeren as Jieli is going back Australia for studies. There is now a rule in the restaurant such that we need to spend $10 and above per person. However, we can combine 2 cards to make it $20 and above, eg if person A eats $6 of food and person B eats $15 of food, person A need not spend additional $4 to make his bill $10 as he can combine with person B's card to make it above $20. Anyway, i ordered rosti as usual and had a banana sweet crepe to make my bill $9.90. The rest ordered quite of food. The ambience there was nice and we spent around 2 hours inside chatting and eating. Took a photo there as well.

After our lunch, we headed upstairs to take a neoprint. I was actually against the idea as Shilei and i have digital cameras and we do not need to pay money to take photos from our cameras. The queue was rather long and KP and i seem to be the only guys in the neoprint shop. It costs $9 for a piece of neoprint approximately the size of 4 poka cards. The machine have instructions in Japanese and luckily some of them knew the language to a certain extent. They spent some time decorating the photos with stars, moons, shiny things, frames and alphabets after the machine took our photos. It had been years since i took a neoprint and i was rather amazed with its improvement in technology although the size of the neoprint remained as small as before.

The gals went shopping at annex after that while KP and i were window shopping. We spent some time looking for a photoshop with a machine that prints out photos from digital cameras after that. Found it in Paragon and we spent some time inserting the SD card before we can use the machine. It was my second time using the machine but didn't realise that we can add frames, calendars or words to the digital photos. After we printed the above photo, Jieli took out 4 notebooks with intricately handmade covers as our early 21st birthday presents since she won't be coming back until the end of this year. I was pleasantly surprised of the effort she put in to design the notebook and she explained the significance of the notebook which is to paste photos in it so that our friends can sign on the book beside the photos, like an album memoir. I was thinking, wow, i wouldn't go to such lengths for a present.

Walked around in Taka for a short while and parted as most of us had our own night programmes. Met up with my JC classmates as always on sat night. We had our dinner at cine food court and escaped from orchard because of

Chingay. There was a lot of people gathering by the side of Orchard road to view the annual street and floats parade. We walked all the way to Suntec and were really tired after that. I had been walking around since afternoon and my back is really sore. Jimmy and Derrick joined us after we arrived at Suntec as they were driving and Orchard road was closed. Some of them wanted to watch I Do, I Do and we bought tickets for the 11.20 pm show. We got rather bored as there was nothing much to do in the 1h 30 mins wait. Spent some time in the arcade and Suntec's sky garden as some of them never went there before. Took a photo of the night cityscape from sky garden.

Went to grab another bite before the show. I Do, I Do is actually a very funny show but the content is like a TV sitcom. Headed home after the show. I found a very good slot for my driving test on 4 mar which is actually in less than 2 weeks time.

Sunday, went to the temple with my mum in the early afternoon and headed to Sim Lim Square for my Samsung lcd monitor as new stock had arrived. The price was less than what i expected as they are having a post CNY promotion and the discounted price is $408, less than the market price by around $25. Bought 50 CD-Rs also as my stash has reduced dramatically after i bought the DVD burner. Went home to put my LCD monitor and went out again to watch a movie with Weiming. Watched A Very Long Engagement which is a really good show. Oscar nominated movies are coming out in bunches every week and i have Million Dollar Baby and Ray yet to watch. Will be watching Closer, Sideways, Howl's Moving Castle next week as well. No $$$$$$..........

>> Wednesday, February 16, 2005

Spent valentine's day at home coz i'm sick and don't wanna go out. I just want to spend a day recuperating. But i was feeling really bored in the afternoon coz i didn't have much to do. So bored that i played my gameboy which i didn't touch for months since i went Mindef. Got a bit of a headache after playing for around 1 hour and started walking around my house as i felt a little dizzy staring at certain spot for some time. Jogged for 15 mins on the 4th storey of my house as the wind was really refreshing and felt that i needed to work those lazy muscles of mine. Felt much better and energized after that mini workout. At night was less boring as there is a new Channel 8 drama at 9 pm and Desperate Housewives at 10 pm.

Tuesday, went out with Kok Sheng to Sim Lim Square as i needed to buy a dvd burner and a lcd monitor. The monitor i am using presently is around 8 years old and many people have commented on the lack of sharpness of the monitor. I definitely agree as i cannot see the details of really dark photos clearly when i transfer the pictures from my camera to my computer. Thus i decided to splurge my money on a new lcd monitor. I was collecting a lot of brochures so that i could compare the prices between different shops. I got my BenQ Dvd burner promptly after entering a shop which sells $10 less than the market price of $129. Next up, i got 10 dvd-r for $12 and a dvd-rw for $4. After that, i began my search for shops selling cheap lcd monitors. I had already gotten info from Lloyd that Samsung and Viewsonic lcd monitors are amongst the best brands in the market and that Samsung should be the brand coming out tops but is more expensive than other brands. Started asking individual shops for their prices and found out that Samsung monitors costs only around $20 more than other brands. Decided on a model 710N Syncmaster as recommended by a saleperson. Flipped through the brochures to check out the market price ($439) and went various shops to search for those selling it cheap. Found a shop selling it for $427 but it was currently out of stock. Headed to another shop selling it for $432 and asked for a discount but was declined. Thus, i decided to come back another day for it. Walked around Bugis for some time before heading back home. Bought speakers for $7 and a usb extender for $4 as well. Gotta buy what is needed as i don't go Sim Lim Square often.

After i reached home, i spent a few hours dismantling my CPU, examining the structure of the cd component, the fastened nuts which cannot be unscrewed, the origin of the wires connected to the back of my old cd-rom drive and the unused connections for new cd drives. I was unscrewing, screwing, tugging and examining but to no avail. I just couldn't dismantle the cd component and put the new drive inside the CPU. I was about to give up when i got an idea, take out the old cd-rom drive and put in the new one. Felt rather stupid that i didn't think about earlier. I was just fixated on putting the new drive inside underneath the old cd-rom drive where there are 2 slots available for new drives. Installed Nero burning software and a few programs from the cd provided. Started my chain of burning cds from Jay Chou's ktv to his concert, to some chinese albums, to some data files and finally some english albums. Slept at around 4 am.

Went out with Liyuan to watch Bayside Shakedown 2 at Causeway Point today. Didn't have much to do after the movie and left for home. Got driving in the afternoon tomorrow and friday. Gotta sleep already. Zzzz........

Sick, Tired, Broke

>> Sunday, February 13, 2005

Went Uncle Ringo Fun Fair at Woodlands on sat night with my JC friends. The admission fee is $2 but the rides inside were rather expensive. Most of the rides there require 3 tokens and we need to exchange money for tokens at the booths. One token costs $2.50 and we exchanged for 4 tokens initially. Took a ride on Air Force 1 which is a revolving claw like machine suspended from the ground which swings 180 degrees from left to right. It is a rather exciting ride but i think we probably shouldn't have chose it as the first one to try as it moves quite fast and is rather challenging. Derrick and i were a bit nauseous after the ride and we rested for some time and checked out other fun rides. There is a reverse bungee and it costs 9 tokens which is $22.50, cheaper than the one in clarke quay which costs $30. But none of us tried it though.
The second most expensive ride which costs 6 tokens is a very tall 360 degrees rotating pin and it has a very large circumference. It is slightly lower than the reverse bungee but it is very challenging as well. The price factor was restricting us from trying them. We exchanged for 2 more tokens and were deciding on Skyfire, a tall machine which spins 360 degrees from both directions and suspends people upside down for some time in the middle of the ride.

It is rather exciting too but felt a bit painful when overturned coz the whole body weight is resting on the shoulders and my shoulders were a bit sun burnt on fri when i went sentosa. It was still not bad a ride but Derrick and i got a bit dizzy as expected. I was in a better condition although i still felt a bit weak on the knees. We had already spent $17 on the 2 rides including the admission fee.

Left after Jimmy spent the remaining of his tokens as he deemed some of the rides we took to be too challenging. Felt much better after our dinner at the food court. Edwin sent his gf home after that and we went West Mall to watch Constantine as cathay cineplexes do not have that show. Gs met up with us, we caught the 11.45 pm show and had the front row seats as we bought the tickets 5 mins before the show. My back was a little sore after the show was i slid my body down so that my head need not bend too much upwards. Left for home after that.

Kit Wing's 21st birthday party is at her house today and most of us arrived late as usual. We had contributed for a pair of diamond earrings as her present. Had some food and held a mini gambling den in her room. It was rather cramped as around 14 of us sat in a circle to play blackjack. Each of us had to be dealer for 2 rounds as no one wanted to be the dealer. Some of them had really small bets like 10 cents and 20 cents and we were always short of coins to pay as there were many people playing. Left at around 4.30 pm as some of the guys had to book in and some had to continue visiting relatives at night.

Counted my ang baos just now and the total was a whopping $502. It is considered quite a huge increase from previous years as quite a lot of my cousins got married and my parents had invited many of their country club friends over to our house on the first day of CNY. Returned $400 to my father as i owed him money for the driving lessons.

Slept for a few hours just now as i took my cough/flu medicine which made me quite drowsy.

Sentosa

>> Saturday, February 12, 2005

I lost my voice when i was at sentosa today. I think it is the combination of prolonged ktv, excessive sun, late nights and heaty chinese new year goodies that caused my voice to croak like an old toad.

Met at Habourfront at 9 am and had breakfast at the hawker centre beside the bus interchange. Took a shuttle bus to Sentosa and headed to Siloso Beach via the monorail. Played volleyball when we reached the beach. Keng Han bought a frisbee later and we played an intensive round of frisbee under the super hot sun. We all got tired after around 1 hour and some of them headed to the sea to cool down. I didn't want to get wet so i was lazing around chatting with some of them and practised my aiming with Jianyu. Daryl arrived shortly and we threw him into the sea after emptying his pockets of his handphone and wallet. Paul gave him a nasty scratch on his inner arm accidentally while hoisting his body into the sea. It was a really bad scratch and all the clotted blood could be seen along the line of scratch. Daryl was treated to a meal at delifrance in return. We had our expensive lunch at Delifrance just outside Siloso Beach where we were having our beach activities.

I was quite pissed that my volleyball was lost just a few hours at Sentosa. I had entrusted my volleyball to David but he left it at the bags area when he was playing frisbee and it was gone when we finished playing. Nevertheless, we continued our fun and games. I followed Kok Sheng on a long Dragon trail to an underground bunker on top of a hill overlooking the sea. Took quite a number of photos along the way. I thought all of the bunkers can be explored but the underground ones are locked. It was a rather interesting experience coz i did not visit the places before. Walked all the way down the hill to get back to Siloso Beach. They were playing frisbee again and had found my volleyball in the vicinity. Someone actually asked for the ball back and said that the ball is theirs but after some clarifications with me, they confirmed that the volleyball is mine and took it back from that guy. Luckily i was not at the beach at that time or else i would have blown my top and scolded that asshole who stole my volleyball and had the cheek to say that the volleyball is his after stealing it. Rested for a while on Paul's ground sheet and showed some of them the photos i took. The sun did not decrease its intensity after noon and most of them were sun burnt as they were only wearing bermudas or trunks. They went to bathe after the game and we took a shuttle bus back to the arrival centre and another bus back to Habourfront. Walked aimlessly at Habourfront Shopping Centre for a while before heading to the food junction for some bite. Left for home after that.

Some photos i took

Collected quite a lot of ang baos during chinese new year and this year's collections should be more than $300 as usual. Won $20 from blackjack gambling yesterday night at a relative's house.

Tired, voiceless and sun burnt gunz out.

Happy Chinese New Year to everyone!

Had driving lesson in the morning today and slept for several hours before the reunion dinner tonight. My parents had catered food as the restaurants outside were expensive and have a long waiting time. My grandmother, uncles and aunties arrived shortly and we had our dinner. Played with my cousins for a while, felt really bored and chatted on msn for quite some time. My sister and some of my relatives played mahjong but i didn't play because they were gambling with money. So there i was wasting my time in front of the computer. Ks told me about this website www.spi.com.sg
which is really interesting. I got to know so many haunted places in singapore and some of them are really scary.

This is an extract from one of SPI agents describing the capture of ghostly activities on film at this site www.spi.com.sg/gallery/photos/index.htm
:

To try to unravel the mystery of other world with a single explanation is thus not possible. In the following photos, I will attempt to categorize the types of ghosts that I have manage to captured so far in digital photography.

Most of the pictures shown would be the form of an orb.

What is an orb?

Well, they are anything round, or spherical in shape. Most of my pics are captured with digital camera. Film camera are not as sensitive as digital cameras. Reason being that the technology that goes behind digital technology is that same one that powered the most powerful telescope in the world - the Hubble Space Telescope. The technology allows the telescope to capture even minute light that had traveled millions of light years to reach planet earth, and show the images in such clarity.

Apply that technology to a camera that you will find that many, many things are capture within that camera.

Unfortunately besides the strange anomalies like spirits, orbs and such, normal airborne particles are captured as well because of its sensitivity. Many of the orbs that are showed in many websites around the worlds could be attributed to dust or moisture droplets.

The orb shape is created when the light is bounced off the tiny speck of dust and is captured by that incredible digital eye. That technology is called CCG or something like that.

How to tell between a dust occurrence and the real thing? When you see it, you will know if it is a paranormal orb or not. It depends on certain things, like if it appears in great numbers, and in that same area, and in all your photos, then you are just taking dust or pollen or something else that is air borne. But if it only appears in some, and not in others, then maybe you got something weird going on

Dust that reflect lights exist only couple of inches from the flashbulb, and you can actually see the dust particles when you observe the camera. But paranormal orbs are usually about 5 - 10 inches across, and so reflect can lights from several meters away. So the trick is that when you are taking pictures, don't look through the screen or hole viewer. Instead, look ahead in front of you. If you are lucky, you can see that some meters away something in mid air reflected light back, much like a mirror in a distance. Then you know you really got 'something'

End of extract

Wondering why i highlighted the sentence? It is because i was the lucky one who saw it. This has reinforced my belief that we experienced ghostly behaviour that night. I had a strong feeling that night when we were at that place too.

Anyway, enough talk about ghosts and stuff. Enjoy your holidays guys and happy viewing www.spi.com.sg

Ktv marathon (not movie)

>> Monday, February 07, 2005

Saturday, went for driving theory lessons with daryl and liyuan in the morning. I was really tired coz slept for around 5 hours only. The lesson started at 8 am and ended at 11.30 am. I was sleeping 30% of the time there. Went Lot 1 to collect my ordered shirt and bought a $8.85 golden brown hi-treatment bleach hair dye at guardian.

Went out with my classmates for a ktv session at party world in the afternoon and sang from 3.30 pm to 7.00 pm because some of the usual suspects arrived late. The price is a costly $14 per pax but i think it is about the same price as k-box which is from 2 pm to 7 pm at $15. Edwin and Terence joined us after our KTV session and we ate dinner at Asian Food Mall in Lucky Plaza. Wandered around along Orchard road without a clue of where to go next. Some suggested drinking at Clarke Quay but the price factor restrained us from going. Edwin then suggested going Buikt Timah for a quick bite as he ate a little just now. We were to planning to go to back to the place where Terence and i saw the thing after that. Ate some good tasting kaya toast at Killney Kopitiam. Headed to my house nearby to pick up my camera so that we can hopefully capture some snapshots of the unknown. Then, we were on the way to the deserted place. Drove to the road leading to Sungei Buloh and did not see anything remotely creepy. The road we were on did not seem like the scary road Terence and i saw it. There were farms and some buildings by the side of the road but we did not notice them the first time we were there. The street lights were also brighter than the last time we were there. However, we were 100% sure this was the road which we turned into the first time. It was just that the road seems to be different. We searched the area for other roads that resemble the one we saw but were unsuccessful. Zewen was taking some random photos for any ghost evidence but nothing special appeared in the photos, until we hit a dead end. The place has an opening with 2 walls in front of it and an entrance in the centre. The right wall has an altar on top of it and they advised me not to take a photo of it. I winded down the window so that there will not be any reflection of light and took 2 photos as i was on the side closer to the walls.

Did not notice anything different about the 1st photo but when i took the 2nd photo, i was felt a bit weird. There were many tiny specks of light in the air behind the wall when the camera flashed. It was only for a split second but it was clearly visible. Zewen saw it as well and i took a look at the 2nd photo. There were many white spots on the 2nd photo.

I told them to get out of the place immediately as i was sure what i had shot is not normal. They drove to another eerie lane and i took 3 photos with intervals of about 10 seconds between each photo.

Noticed something weird? There was a white dot in the bottom left corner of the 1st photo but it shifted behind the fence in the 2nd photo and it completely disappeared in the 3rd photo. I was kind of freaked out by the photos already. Edwin's car was running out of petrol and we exited from Choa Chu Kang towards Woodlands Shell station. Shown them the photos after that but they were quite sceptical. GS insisted that the white spots were optical illusion and that my camera was lousy. Derrick also said that the scentific explanation is that they are concentrations of water molecules as the area is forested and that the water concentration there is higher. But if that is the case, how come so many water molecules would suddenly appear in the 2nd wall photo compared to the 1st one? Zewen said that it might be dust particles but i did not see any dust particles when i took the photos and dust particles couldn't possibly be that big. If my camera lens is dirty, there would be a spot in every photo i took but there was not. Nevertheless, they still had their own scepticism. My own perception is that the spirits were awakened and stunned by the 1st flash and all of them rose from the ground to find out what happened which is when i took the 2nd shot. I believe that the area behind the 2 walls is a cemetery, but it is just my own thoughts, no proof of it though.

After our Lim Chu Kang adventure, we squeezed our brains for any ideas of the next place to go and Zewen suggested a famous haunted Hillview mansion although none of us had heard of it before. However, he was not sure of the exact location of the mansion. I suddenly remembered that there are a number of deserted flats in Hillview area closest to Mindef and we decided to go there if we cannot find the mansion. Drove along Hillview Ave and into the small lanes along private houses but could not find it. Zewen and i even asked one of the condo security guards but he had no idea as well. Gave up searching for it and headed to the empty flats nearby. We noticed that there is a strange red light from one of the apartments in Block 3 facing a big patch of grass. How come there is a red light when nobody is supposed to live in the flats?

Close-up of the red light
However, the corridor lights are all on and it does not look very eerie to us. But when all of us slowly creeped up the 2nd level, it was rather scary as we do not want to walk past the apartments with all the windows open. Nevertheless, we peered inside out of curiosity and some of us were shocked to see our own image when we walked past an apartment with a mirror inside. We only went up to the 2nd level and did not go further up to explore the source of the red light at level 9. Took a group photo outside the flat. Left for home after that.

My sec sch friends organised another ktv session on sun and i attended as well. We went to k-box cineleisure and we disappointed that the karoake set and tv were not on yet and the staff told us that it would take around 10-15 mins to warm up and load the program. We waited for around 12 mins and it was ready. When we finished singing the 1st song, the system hanged and the staff restarted the system. We waited for another 10 mins. 5 mins later, the same thing happened again and i was really quite pissed with the karoake system. They said that some workers are renovating the place and they might have disrupted the cables or wires. Luckily, that was the last time it hanged but it was already 12 noon and we had only sang 3 1/2 songs in total because we arrived late as well. We were expecting to be chased out by 2.30 pm as it was supposed to last until 2 pm. However, they did not chase us out until 4.15 pm. We just happily sat there and sang until our throats became dry and coarse. It was definitely worth the money as we had food, drinks and KTV for more than 4hrs at only $6.40.

Went window shopping at Taka after that and had our dinner at lucky plaza again because all the other places were packed with people. Originally decided to play arcade at Midpoint Orchard where the games are really cheap but realised it had ceased its operations. Played arcade for a short while at cineleisure instead. Went home after that. Did not watch a movie this weekend.

Decided to dye my hair on sun night and requested for my sister's help. I had to mix a tube of dye and some reagents into a bottle of bleach water. Then, my sis spread it all over my hair and i waited for 30 mins before washing it all off. Shampooed my hair and put some moisturiser on my hair. The hair colour is not very even though. Took 2 pictures of my hair today.

Had a bit of a flu today and went for 2 consecutive driving lessons and a driving simulator lesson. Got a severe headache after all the mentally strenous lessons. Must be because of my flu. Anyway, only 2 stamps, a final evaluation and 2 autocar lessons before booking my practical test. Found 2 giant spiders in the kitchen just now, tried to kill them using insecticide but it doesn't work. Got a driving lesson at 9.50 am next day. Gotta sleep now.

Tired physically and mentally

>> Friday, February 04, 2005

Booked for driving school on wed morning with liyuan and put $800 into my BBDC account. Booked 2 practical lessons on fri, 2 theory lessons each on thur and sat at the internet terminals immediately after creation of my account. Went Lot 1 for some shopping of new year clothes afterward. Bought a shirt at men studio and a t-shirt at world of sports. Coincidentally, we saw aaron who was in my PMB branch in Mindef and found out that my whole branch was having lunch at a restaurant in Lot 1. Went there to greet them and left shortly coz we had lunch already. Paul joined us later to search for jobs at hotels as part-time banquet waitors since we are learning driving and can't get a full-time job. Arrived at Shangrila Hotel after walking around 400 meters from the bus stop opposite Raffles Girls school. Went in through the back door for employees and headed for the training room at human resources. We were rather surprised with the condition of the employees sector which looked like offices in a factory. We were told that the interview is at 6.30 pm and the time then was 1.30 pm. Wondered where to go after that and we decided to try other hotels in Orchard. Went Grand Hyatt and asked the reception about application of jobs and were directed to the entrance for employees at the dilapidated back door behind the hotel. Had to exchange our id for security passes to enter the place. We were given an application form to fill in after going to human resources. Then, we were bought through huge kitchens to outside the banquet office and were requested to wait outside. Gave them the application forms and were told to attend the training lesson at 5 pm when they will shortlist people for the part-time job. Went Marriott later for the same thing and were informed that they do not need part-timers currently. Meritus Mandarin were our next stop but their reply was no as well. Headed back to Grand Hyatt and waited 1h at a ballroom for the training class which actually starts at 6 pm. Found out from a supervisor that the hourly rate for first-timers is $5. It's $1 less than Shangrila and we told them no. Wandered to Wheelock and filled in more job application forms at Olio Dome. Went back home since we could not meet the 6.30 pm timing for Shangrila interview. Did not find a job in the end but i think it was kind of interesting searching places for jobs.

Kept searching the bbdc website for practical lessons cancellations so that i can book. Chanced upon a thursday timeslot and booked the practical lesson immediately.

Went for my 1st practical lesson in BBDC and spent some time searching for my instructor and car amidst the thong of people. My instructor was quite good as he told me the right things to do instead of shouting at me. Drove onto public road after driving around 20 times around the circuit. Stalled the engine once and realised how easy it is to stall unlike military vehicles which would vibrate violently before stalling. The half-clutch position is like a 3 quarter clutch position and if u release a bit more, it would stall. The first lesson was more like a familiarisation of civilian cars but the gear was very smooth and can be handled with more ease than military vehicles. The pickup speed for driving centre cars are all quite slow. Anyhow, i got 8 stamps for my 1st lessons. Felt quite happy with my number until i saw Daryl and knew that he got 11 stamps. Talked for a short while before attending my theory lesson which starts 10 mins after my prac. I took a bit of time searching for the room and was 10 mins late. Had a rather informative Basic Theory Lesson 2 which reinforces the things i should do and shouldn't do during the test. Watched a few video clips of real accidents on the road and it made my mind more alert. After lesson 2 ended, i attended BTL 1 which was rather boring as i knew most of the information already. Slept through 25% of the lesson. Spent 100 + 10 + 100 + 10 + 100 = 320 mins in the driving centre on thur.

I was contemplating whether i wanna go kayaking with ks, jy, zy and jk on fri morning as it was very far away from my house and i have driving lessons in the afternoon. Went anyway since i love to go out more than i love to sleep. Took 184 to clementi and took 196 from the interchange. Bad bad decision. I was in bus 196 for 1h and 27 mins. Arrived at parkway hawker centre late for 45 mins. Luckily jy and zy were late too so i was spared from the chiding. After we finished our breakfast, we headed to Big Splash's kayak rental store after walking for around 25 mins. The hourly rate was $6 for sit-on-top kayak which was the one for inexperienced kayakers. Ks's kayak was more expensive as he is licensed to use the sit-in kayak as he got 2 stars for the kayaking course in the past. Headed to the empty beach carrying the heavy kayaks after storing our valuables and bags. The scenery was very nice and the weather is quite good. I got onto the single kayak and we paddled to a yellow buoy. Continued our paddling after resting for a while. It was rather tiring and my arm muscles were sore after a short while. Felt more pumped up after taking a break at another stretch of beach. Zy and Jy capsized when they tried out Ks's kayak but Zy perservered and did a good job of manoevring the 2-star kayak. We changed kayaks after our break. When we were paddling back to the shore. Jk bumped into Ks and me and the front of his kayak slid up on my ankle depressing the kayak i was on. Luckily, there was no sand or bumpiness underneath the kayak or else i would have bled quite badly. I did not notice my slipper dropping into the sea until a few seconds later and exclaimed that my slipper is gone. Ks saw a hint of orange beside the kayak and reached for it. I was quite happy to see that it hasn't sunk much and reached to grab it too. Guess what? Our double-man kayak flipped and we were thrown into the salty salty sea. My other slipper and Jy's cap also thrown in the sea. Only managed to salvage 1 slipper. Luckily Jy's nike cap floated and was retrieved. Actually i was only planning to change my 3-quarters but now my whole body is wet. We reached the shore at 12.30 pm, carried back the kayaks and washed them, returned the life jackets, paid the fee and went to bathe. I got my driving lessons at 1.55 pm at bbdc and was quite anxious because it was quite late already. Left at 1.15 pm from Big Splash and was walking really fast to a nearby bus stop. Took a bus to paya lebar mrt and was desperately looking for a cab to bring me to bbdc in 20 mins. Finally found an empty cab after crossing a fence onto a traffic light junction to get to the empty cab. I was praying that nothing bad will happen if i was late for the driving lesson. Some of the roads are narrow due to the construction of the Kallang/ Paya Lebar Expressway and there were many cars at traffic light junctions. I was really relieved when we got onto PIE. The trip took about 30 mins and i arrived at bbdc at 2.15 pm, 20 mins later than the scheduled time. Luckily my lesson was not forfeited or i would have cursed myself for days. (1 lesson is $58.80) However, i got only 4 stamps for the 2nd lesson. Was totally disappointed and i think it must be due to my latecoming and that i did not drive very well during the lesson. Had another lesson 10 mins later and the instructor is quite young, around 30 years old i think. I corrected most of the mistakes that i made during the 2nd lesson although i stalled quite a few times on gently-sloped junctions. When i got back my book from the instructor, i flipped through the book and saw that i had completed stage 2. Counted the number of stamps he chopped and it was a whopping 10 stamps! I was really really glad for his generosity and had an increase of 14 stamps out of 33 stamps today. I only need 13 stamps more and 2 auto lessons before booking the practical test. Also have to go for a driving simulator lesson after completing stage 2. My driving program seems to be ahead of schedule as i'm already halfway through the course after 3 days. Hopefully i need only maximum of 5 practical lessons including the 2 compulsory auto lessons before booking for the actual test. My back and legs are quite sore after the 2 driving lessons and my arms are still quite tired.

Will be having 2 driving lessons next mon and 1 lesson on tue. Hopefully i will complete all the stamps by then. It's really amazing how fast we can learn if we got time to spare. Gotta wake up early for theory lessons in the morning later. Ciao!

Last Day in Mindef

>> Tuesday, February 01, 2005

Today is our last day in Mindef. My superior was not in today so i was pleasantly surprised. Helped Benjamin to pack all the P-files into the new compactors. Got quite tired after shifting hundreds of personal files. We had moved the files 3 times. The first time was the first day we came, when the old p-file room had to be cleared of all the files and shelves for renovation. A few weeks later when the renovation was complete, we shifted all the shelves and files to the new room but the compactors were not installed yet. So, today was the third and final time we shifted the files. Went to Mindef emart to spend some credits but did not find anything necessary to buy. In the end, i bought 2 packets of toilet rolls. It was the most practical and essential item every household need i guess. Had a great time chatting with Benjamin today, he is ording in Aug next year and is one year younger than us. But, he got a driving license and drives his parents' car, whom are currently overseas. He also told me that my superior actually liked me, not "like" in the sense like romance but like as in more that that of a subordinate. I was kind of surprised and secretly happy that she appreciated my help these few weeks. I had done so much work for her and i guess i deserved her compliment, haha..... Actually wanted to officially say goodbye to her today but did not get the chance to do so. Helped Ben to shred tons of confidential and restricted papers before we left. I did have an enriching experience there, although we were only there for around 1 month and 10 days, we got to know some really nice people, so i had a bit of a mixed feeling when we left for home. I wished i had some sort of a plan in the weeks ahead but i do not have. Looks like i have to start planning ahead soon.

Time flies, we are almost at the end of our ns life. Only left bmt pop marshaling and collecting of our pink ics left if nothing serious crops up. Wondering if i can dye my hair already?
