Cloverfield

Met up with my jc friends next for dinner as we are celebrating Edwin's birthday as well as farewell dinner for me.
We went Ps for dinner but Edwin had mobilization exercise and could only come at 10 pm. We decided to chit chat at TCC while waiting for him. Had dinner at Billy Bombers at The Cathay and watched Cloverfield next.
Cloverfield is a handheld camcorder show from start to end. My warning to people with motion sickness or prone to dizziness is to avoid watching the show as it may induce vomiting or headaches.
The show starts off with a farewell party for Rob who is leaving New York City for Japan. In the midst of the party, an earthquake stuns the party revelers. Subsequent tremors and explosions sends everyone scrambling to escape the war zone as an unidentified creature is wreaking havoc in the city center. Statue of Liberty is not spared as her head comes crashing down from the sky with bite marks all over the head.
The movie is bloody realistic and it achieves the state of mass hysteria within minutes of monster attack. Don't mistake this show with Godzilla although there are some similarities, the monster here is more vicious, agile, destructive and intelligent. The life footage blends in very well with the special effects and it is definitely commendable work. The pace is fast and the action is gripping. There is even a bit of character development for the lead character Michael Stahl-David but unfortunately none for the rest of them.
The movie is existential fun albeit the camera shakiness and it definitely works in terms of special effects, realism and action.
