Hong Kong Trip: Macau Day 1 (Part 2)

>> Tuesday, January 09, 2007

We passed by the new Lisboa Hotel and casino which they are building to fend off the new competitors like Wynn and Sands in Macau. The new buildings are still in the process of construction though.

The new iconic Lisboa Casino

The old iconic Lisboa Casino built by Stanley Ho

We entered the casino after passing our bags to the bag counter. We were not allowed to take photos inside and there were quite a lot of people inside. We just wanted to take a quick look inside the casino and walked 1 round the circular venue. Smokers are allowed inside casinos and the air inside is simply unpleasant to breathe. I can't stand the air inside not for long and quickly motioned them to get out of the casino.

We proceeded to Wynn Casino just beside Lisboa and our timing was just right, the musical fountain outside the brand new casino has just started. The musical fountain is well orchestrated with soothing music in the background.

The beautiful sunset

We entered Wynn Casino and it was indeed very grand inside. The smell of smoke is less pungent compared to Lisboa as the new casino is bigger and more well ventilated. We got ourselves free tea and free bottles of water after we spotted a lady dispensing tea from a huge shiny pot of tea on trolley. We spent some time touring the giant venue and spent a bit of money ($2) on jackpot as we wanted to reduce the denominations of our big notes (HK$1000).

We then left the casino to have our dinner. Once we stepped out of the casino, the musical fountain started playing and the theme is different than the one in the day. The movements of the water jets are elegant and beautiful.

I'm such a good photographer. Ha....

We walked over to Ding Tai Fung for dinner and the food is quite good, although the quality is not as good as its other branches. We then tried to find the Cybernetic Fountain but sadly it does not seem to be operating. We took a cab to Fisherman's wharf next.

There were very few people at the huge outdoor theme attraction and the lack of atmosphere got to us as well. We were commenting it as a ghost town. We climbed up the Aladdin's volcano and had a bird's eye view of the surrounding night lights.

The brightly lit coastline

We spent some time exploring the large fisherman's wharf and took quite a number of photos as there wasn't anything else we could do there.

The colosseum

The European styled buildings housing high-class souvenir shops

The brightly decorated street in Fisherman's Wharf

As you noticed, the architecture there is mostly derived from Europe and we were commenting that we just "visited" Italy, Spain, France, etc. There were more people on the main street although still far fewer than expected considering it being the tourist season. I guess most people just come Macau to gamble.

We crossed the road over to Sands Macau, the world's largest casino. We entered the casino and it was huge indeed. I prefer Wynn's layout and interior design though. We were chided by a staff there for sitting on the jackpot machine seats without using the machines. Left the casino after exploring the first 2 levels as we were not going to gamble anyway.

Outside Sands Macau

We then walked back to the area around our hotel and headed to the departmental store, New Yaohan. We bought some snacks and drinks before heading back to our hotel.
