Back Broken

Went to NUS to study with Ks and his friend, Shuying, today. It was much more effective than studying at home as i finished revising almost half the syllabus for my chemistry test and started a bit on maths.

Met up with Edwin, Clarence and Meibin in the evening as we were going to watch Brokeback Mountain. Had very high expectations for this movie which garnered Golden Globes Best Picture, BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts) Best Film, Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion, 8 Oscar nominations and many many others awards all over the world.

The story is about 2 cowboys who formed a lifelong connection while working at the picturesque Brokeback Mountain herding sheep and chasing away predators. Will they forget their sexual trysts and strong bonds after their work stint was over? Turns out that neither of them could forget the deep love and longing for each other.

Both of them eventually get married and have children, but are they happy? Their secret rendezvous every few months has unevitably caused a drift between themselves and their wives but they still try to remain with their families. Are their wives happy? Is it fair for their wives and children?

A meeting only once every few months, is it enough? Jack gets sexually frustrated and he gets involved with other guys to satisfy his cravings. For all the questions i posed above, no is the answer for all of them. Why does Ennie not want to open a ranch with Jack and live together happily ever after? Why do they have to live lives deprived of the presence of their true love? Not only the patriarchal society and culture is at work, the responsibilities of their families play a huge role as well.

The characterizations are very good and the entire cast is brilliant in each role especially Heath Ledger, giving a heart-breakingly understated performance. Romanticists will love this film for its honesty, realistic storyline and suppressed emotions. A love story that was not meant to be, a love story that is oppressed by the traditional society, a love story that is filled with unfulfilled dreams, unfulfilled desires, unfulfilled longing.

A great love story indeed.......
