Meetups and Movie

>> Sunday, January 11, 2009

Met up with Weiming and Fuli at Suntec for a get together session after Weiming's 4 week tour of Europe in December. Chatted for a few hours while having some food.

After that, i met up with my jc friends to watch Rachel Getting Married. I gotta admit that i was really keen on watching the movie after reading the raving reviews and the growing hype about Anne Hathaway's possibility of getting Oscar nomination for Best Actress and the chances of her winning the coveted Best Actress Award for Golden Globes.

When Kym returns to the Buchman family home for the wedding of her sister Rachel, she brings a long history of personal crisis, family conflict and tragedy along with her. The wedding couple's abundant party of friends and relations have gathered for a joyful weekend of feasting, music and love, but Kym is a catalyst for long-simmering tensions in the family dynamic. Synopsis extracted from Sg Movies.

Cut to the point. Rachel Getting Married is not a cinematic show. The story about Rachel getting married and Kym, who just got out from drug rehab isn't what i call an interesting or engaging one. However, one thing to note is that the cast, especially Anne Hathaway, did a phenomenal job in the show. Without the performances, this show would be nothing.

The back story on Ethan, Kym and Rachel's late brother is really touching and even though they did not show the accident, Kym's immense guilt over Ethan's death is significantly felt. This story on family angst is definitely not a show for everyone, this show will most likely give audiences a headache due to the shaky camera (but luckily not for me), or bore the hell out of some people.

Overall, this show did not meet up with my high expectations of course. The documentary style shooting is a little annoying with the shaky camera and we are just not interested in some of the minute details of the wedding. The movie will leave you with a little bad or sour aftertaste (although i still love Anne Hathaway and her performance).
