My lorry!

>> Tuesday, February 28, 2006

My father had just entrusted his lorry to me and i now have a vehicle! My uncle is not working under my father anymore and my father got the lorry back from him. Had an orientation drive on saturday with my father guiding me and it was all smooth except a mounted curb during turning. Still not used to the length of the vehicle and for every turn that i have to make, i have to take note that the rear wheels can make the turn.

Drove to school on sunday night and it was the first time i drove a civilian vehicle alone! After getting my license almost 1 year ago, i finally can make full use of it.

Had 2 tests this morning and i spent 1 whole tiring day on sunday preparing for it. Slept at 4 am on monday morning and had 3.5 hours of sleep only. Made a few careless mistakes during the tests.

Anyway, i had a long nap just now and went to a coffee shop near NTU with Clarence for supper. Transportation is now no longer restricted to bus operating timings. I just need to buck up my lorry driving skills.... :)

Ktv and study

Went K-box with Fuli, Weiming and Bernard on thursday in the morning. We sang until 2.30 pm and headed to Meridien food court as it has become our regular hangout area. We had lunch there and chatted until 7 pm before going PS to walk around. Left for home at around 8 pm.

I've been doing my formal lab report the whole of today and the time now is 6.08 am. Finished my 10 page report which is due next friday. Left with a minor project, 1.5 tests to study, 1 tutorial pending, 1 written assignment and 2 days to complete all these. I guess i should be able to complete all these if nothing major crops up. Mugger me! Still got 4 movies left to watch, namely Munich, Capote, Hidden and Walk The Line. I should be leaving them for next week and next next week.

Gotta sleep now....

Asian Aerospace!

>> Thursday, February 23, 2006

Met up with my aerospace coursemates at bedok bus interchange and we headed to Changi International Exhibition and Convention Centre. The aerial display is at 11.30 am and we waited for a while by the sea to view the aeroplanes flying and performing stunts.

People viewing the aerial stunts

There were not a lot of planes performing stunts and we were quite bored with the aerial display which lasted for around an hour. We had to wait nearly 5 minutes between each aerial flight display as well.

I guess it is because we went on a trade day and the aerial display is not as important except during the 2 days Asian Aerospace is open to the public (25th & 26th Feb). The last segment was SIA's A380 flying around and circling the skies above in its monstrous size.

SIA's world first A380

After that, we went into Changi International Exhibition & Convention Centre for the exhibits show. There were many people around and most people were adults wearing suits and business coats. The exhibition hall was much bigger than the Langkawi Air Show which i attended last December.

Before we went inside

We split into groups and walked around the human-packed area looking at the exhibits, displays, video programmes and airplane models. Took quite a lot of photos together.

In front of a gigantic engine

Missiles Specialists

Tank specialists

Next, we had our lunch at an area outside the exhibition hall which was rather hot and humid. The price of the food was very expensive as well and 2 of my friends paid $7 for their lunch which could have been much cheaper if it was sold at a different place.

We then headed to a few other exhibition halls and went to view the static aircraft display at a large open space outside. Took photos of each aircraft and headed to queue for a bus which takes us to see the large aircraft display. There were only 3 huge airplanes on display and we took a group photo together.

Underneath the hot sun

After spending more than 1 hour under the seering heat, most of us had slight sunburn on our faces. We went back into the exhibition halls and walked around taking our last view of the exhibits before leaving.

We walked all the way to Changi Village to have our dinner and took a long bus ride to Tampines. Most of us were exhausted as we had spent the entire day walking and we all woke up very early.

I reached home at 7.30 pm and rested for almost an hour before going out again to watch Syriana with Daryl at Causeway Point.

Syriana is an ambitious movie that attempts to enlighten viewers of the politics of the oil companies in US, the transnational bribes and manipulations, the growing trend of terrorism in the Middle East, the brainwashing and recruitment of suicide bombers, the assassination of potential threats to the US economy, etc.......

The stories of an assassin, a financial advisor, a suicide bomber, a puppet Emir and managers of Connex-Killen oil company serve as a contemporary warning to the ignorant. Oil (money) is the root of all evil as dark secrets are unfolded with the impending merger of Connex and Killen. This movie is extremely relevant in our present times and it is also very complicated with the amount of things it wants to tell.

It is serious and compelling storytelling which demands our attention and brain cells. The movie is too intelligent for its own good and it advances faster than the speed my brain can process. The filmmakers are dedicated in empowering audiences with sociopolitical relevance as well as confusing audiences with the numerous characters and extremely detailed script.

Good acting by the experienced cast though. Admirable effort by the director cum screenwriter, Stephen Gaghan.

Shopping and movies

>> Wednesday, February 22, 2006

Went to Weiting's house to visit her as she is sick and we wanted to visit her as a group before Jieli flies back to Perth for her final semester. We couldn't really stop chatting as we hadn't seen each other for quite some time.

A picture of the 4 of us in the living room

We went to AMK S11 for our lunch and Jieli suggested that we accompany her for some shopping in orchard. The 4 of us went to town and we spent hours walking around different shops and shopping centres before settling down at Mac for our milkshakes. It was great to catch up with old classmates once again and we had much fun teasing each other about almost anything.

I was meeting Derrick to watch Match Point at Cineleisure at 9.15 pm and waited for around 2 hours as the 3 of them left at 7.15 pm.

Match Point is a movie on infidelities and its consequences. Chris is a tennis pro who has a girlfriend with a rich family. Chris marries Chloe, his girlfriend, and climbs up the social ladder. However, Chris is attracted to the sexy and voluptuous Nola, Chloe's brother's fiance. Love and lust become intertwined and the dallyings between Chris and Nola gets serious.

Lust is the archilles heel for most male species for sure. Soon, Chris realises the difference between love and lust, and tries to find a solution for the messy situation. This story is an allegory that warns people the perils of toying of others' feelings. Luck plays a huge part in determining the future of each person as well. Either you win or lose in life might just be changed forever if luck favours you or not.

A social commentary which is witty, dark, taut and morally resonant, featuring an engaging storyline about class, sacrifices and hidden agendas.

Back Broken

>> Tuesday, February 21, 2006

Went to NUS to study with Ks and his friend, Shuying, today. It was much more effective than studying at home as i finished revising almost half the syllabus for my chemistry test and started a bit on maths.

Met up with Edwin, Clarence and Meibin in the evening as we were going to watch Brokeback Mountain. Had very high expectations for this movie which garnered Golden Globes Best Picture, BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts) Best Film, Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion, 8 Oscar nominations and many many others awards all over the world.

The story is about 2 cowboys who formed a lifelong connection while working at the picturesque Brokeback Mountain herding sheep and chasing away predators. Will they forget their sexual trysts and strong bonds after their work stint was over? Turns out that neither of them could forget the deep love and longing for each other.

Both of them eventually get married and have children, but are they happy? Their secret rendezvous every few months has unevitably caused a drift between themselves and their wives but they still try to remain with their families. Are their wives happy? Is it fair for their wives and children?

A meeting only once every few months, is it enough? Jack gets sexually frustrated and he gets involved with other guys to satisfy his cravings. For all the questions i posed above, no is the answer for all of them. Why does Ennie not want to open a ranch with Jack and live together happily ever after? Why do they have to live lives deprived of the presence of their true love? Not only the patriarchal society and culture is at work, the responsibilities of their families play a huge role as well.

The characterizations are very good and the entire cast is brilliant in each role especially Heath Ledger, giving a heart-breakingly understated performance. Romanticists will love this film for its honesty, realistic storyline and suppressed emotions. A love story that was not meant to be, a love story that is oppressed by the traditional society, a love story that is filled with unfulfilled dreams, unfulfilled desires, unfulfilled longing.

A great love story indeed.......

Kit's Birthday Celebration

Had lab in the morning today and my group completed the tedious report after 3 hours 30 mins.

I met up with my jc classmates in the evening to celebrate Kit Wing's birthday. We went Fish & Co at The Glass House opposite PS for our dinner cum celebration. Some of us waited really long for our food and we spent 3 hours in the restaurant chatting and eating our seafood platter. Took several photos as well.

Photo outside Fish & Co

We headed to Balcony pub at Heeren and we had cocktails and beer. This pub even contains a real jacuzzi for decoration purposes.

Joked, crapped and chatted for another 2 hours before heading back home. If only life was so carefree everyday.

Tired

>> Friday, February 17, 2006

Had a run around NTU yesterday and went for my cca activity in the evening today. There were rather few people who attended today's activity and we were taught how to sing a song called "Wo De Wei Lai Bu Shi Meng". There were a total of 2 remakes of the song by original singer Zhang Yu Sheng and we listened to all 3 versions of the song.

The game segment was more fun as each group had to pick a singer from many pieces of folded paper and then sing 1 line each from 10 different songs by the singer that we randomly picked. My group got Jolin Tsai and we only could think of 9 songs that was sung by her. The forfeit was to sing the song we learnt just now.

The next segment was also quite interesting as we have to choose songs that could fit into a series of guitar chords. Since i do not have any knowledge of guitar chords, my group members chose songs like Guan Huai Fang Shi and 2 of the more popular songs that fits into the criteria.

Normally, i would be back home by this time but i got a make-up lab session tomorrow morning and i'm still in my hall. Woohoo... 1 week break has arrived!

Bitch post truncated

Went for my elective today but no movie was screened and there was a 3 hour lecture instead. He discussed Judou and City of Sadness today which improved my history as the focus had already been shifted to sociopolitical and transnational theme. Judou was made immediately after the Tiananmen incident and it discussed certain issues which have sociopolitical undercurrents. City of Sadness was made in 1989 and that was only 2 years after Taiwan was freed from martial law. Did anyone know that Taiwan was under the occupation of the Japanese for 50 years from 1895 to 1945? Did anyone know that Taiwan was under martial law for 40 years from 1947 to 1987 when citizens lived in fear of riots and killings that was prevalent in the earlier years?

I did not know all these facts until the lecturer discussed about it. Anyway, i signed up for OCBC debit card at a roadshow in NTU after that and won a bag after hitting bullseye on the dart board. Went to the media resource library to watch Goddess, a movie which i missed as i did not attend the first lecture for my elective this semester.

I went to Jurong Point to watch Jarhead after that and it was great to see a war movie again. I can't remember what was the last war movie i've watched. After experiencing army, i think i can more or less understand what the soldiers were going through. Jarhead is about the Gulf War and US Marines were deployed to Kuwait to protect the oilfields and fight against the Iraqis if necessary. The soldiers' enthusiasm was infectious and they were comical, rowdy, gung-ho and high-spirited.

Soon, they realise that the war was not what they had expected and they get bored of the heat, the lack of women and the training that was not put into action. It is not a boring show though as we see troops decked in MOP 1 playing soccer, staff sergeant unleashing perpetual punishments, soldiers doing interesting things to kill time and some of them constantly reminiscing of their loved ones.

It is actually an anti-war movie as the true life account of Anthony Swofford depicts the burnt corpses laying around, the sheer psychological torture of the soldiers and the aftermath which still rendered them as jarheads. Good acting by Jake Gyllenhaal and the story makes us think about unnecessary violence, wasted resources, impoverised countries and the moral turmoil which everyone of us has experienced before.

Welcome to the suck (tagline), war sucks indeed!

V-Day

It's Valentine's Day today and just another ordinary day for me. I've never celebrated it in all my 21 years anyway. I had my physics test today and it confirmed my poor foundations of basic concepts and understanding of optics and quantum physics. Luckily i got some help from my classmates sitting around. Haha... I only knew how to do 4 questions out of 7 and many of them commented the quiz is quite "do-able".

That is the my result of sleeping during lectures, looking at solutions everytime i do the tutorials and burning midnight oil 1 day before the test. My classmates are all so hardworking and clever. Some of them view the lecture recordings even after they had attended the lectures to reinforce their understanding of the things that are taught. So "siao on" right? Anyhow, they do keep me on track with my studies since we always ask each other whether we have done this or that tutorial, prepared for this or that test, etc.

The best thing is that i can consult them with any questions that i don't know.

3 more days to my long awaited 1 week break! Within that 1 week break, i have to complete 1 formal lab report, prepare for 3 tests after the break, discuss a communications project and come back 1 day for one make-up aerospace lab. Busy, busy!

Went k-box with Ks yesterday for a karaoke session from 11 am to 2.30 pm. The 2 of us sang until our voices nearly broke coz we chose a number of extremely challenging songs like Jay's Feng, Tao Zhe's The Art Of War & What's Love, JJ's I Miss You, Jones Shi's Jie Yao, Lee Hom's Kiss Goodbye, Fish Leong's Wo Hai Ji De, etc....

We went HMV after that and i bought 2 dvds that were on sale. Bought Kim Ki Duk's 3-Iron DVD and Penny's karaoke DVD for a total of $17.90 only! We then headed to Centrepoint and bought clothes at Hang Ten along the way. So many shops having sale! Walked around in the shopping centre and Ks bought a black long sleeved shirt at 75% discount at Casserini.

I went Lot1 after our shopping spree to collect my new spectacles. Paid a total of $221 for my new spectacles and my old spectacles that they repaired. Gotta save more money!

Aerospace Launch Program

>> Friday, February 10, 2006

We headed to Nanyang Executive Centre after our lab session on friday for the Official Aerospace Launch Program which many of the professionals in the aerospace industry attended. The Minister of Trade and Industry also came over and gave a speech on the history of flight and aerospace, etc.

I was one of the 5 members who were presenting an experiment and we had to talk to the professionals and describe what we did for the experiment and explain the application of the experiments to real life examples.

The cutting of a huge cake by the Minister to celebrate our degree's launch.

We were all wearing formal clothes and every male student had to put on a tie. I think the last time i put on a tie was during JC which was more than 3 years ago. After manning at the station for my experiment, we had our late but satisfying lunch as there was a huge spread of food and desserts.

After the professionals left, we promptly packed up all the equipments and wrapped them properly to prevent damage or scratches when transporting them back to our aerospace lab. The whole activity ended at around 5.30 pm and i had to leave for the Chinese Society CNY steamboat dinner.

I met Fuli, Liyuan and Sheanwei at Hall 12 and were seated at the multi purpose hall for the steamboat dinner. From the spread of food at the side of the hall, we thought that there wasn't a lot to eat but we were wrong. We were given fried rice/noodles, chicken wings and fried dumplings before the steamboat started and we were already half-full. The steamboat started and we were given plates and plates of meat, fishballs, crabsticks, pig liver, eggs and vegetables. The fire wasn't hot enough as we had to wait for around 5-10 minutes each time we put food into the steamboat. There were performances on stage as well and we were entertained while having our dinner.

While we were happily eating, one of the foreign students from China who shared the table with us dropped an egg into the soup. Guess what, they did not crack the egg and just popped it in. We were initiately quite stunned as we thought that he was going to crack the egg instead of putting the entire egg inside. Too late, the egg was already in the soup and there is nothing we can do about it. He dropped another 3 eggs into the soup. Doesn't he know that eggshells can be very dirty? My appetite went from high to nil in an instant.

Never mind, at least there were people dancing, singing or playing some stupid games on stage to lift my mood back up. We were mostly watching the show that the organisers had put up as the 4 of us had stopped eating while the 5 foreign students from China continued their feast.

Seeing the 5 of them still eating, i thought maybe the boiling water would have killed all the germs by now. So i proceeded to take a few pieces of tofu from the soup. As they were very hot, i had to bring them closer to my mouth to blow on them and i detected an odour from the tofu. On further smelling, i confirmed the tofu smelt like eggshells! Luckily i had not eaten them yet.

We had already cleared more than half of the food on the table before the egg incident and the 4 of us were mainly rather full so the damage inflicted was not too great. Left for home at 10 pm.

1st Stage Performance

Went to perform for HSS week after my lessons today. Was extremely nervous before the actual performance and i was really afraid of forgetting the lyrics. Luckily, it turned out fine besides the slight problems in the sound system. Thanks a lot to Fuli, Edwin and Clarence who turned up to support me!

A picture that Edwin helped to take

Went for my aerospace meeting for the aerospace launch program tomorrow and left promptly as i was going to watch The Constant Gardener with Liyuan and Daryl in the evening.

The Constant Gardener is not about gardening, it is about unravelling the dark secrets of the pharmaceutical companies in Africa and a romance story between a vocal activist and a diplomat. Are the citizens in Africa being treated as guinea pigs for their testing of medicine? Why have some people disappeared after suffering from consumption of their medication? What does pharmaceutical companies gain from free testing of HIV and tuberculosis in Africa? These are some questions raised during the movie as we gradually discover the cause and effect of Tessa's death.

Fernando Meirelles is an incredible force to be reckoned with. His visuals are vivid, the shots in Africa sweltering with heat, the film editing unique yet professional, the cinematography stunning in the African landscape and slums, as well as the London modern architecture with grey-hue. The acting by Rachel Weisz is without a doubt great, especially paired with Ralph Fiennes who compliments her with his mild-mannerism and dedication to solve the mystery. The story is quite detailed and it demands quite some attention from the audience. Not only does it deals with the problems Africa is facing, it also deals with betrayals, infidelities, violence, human rights, death, and ultimately, love.

It is a film that i admired more than i liked as the pacing was rather slow in first half of the show. Most people, including me, would have to watch a second time to fully appreciate and understand the meaning behind it. Complex and socially conscious, this film is high-quality film-making for the serious moviegoer.

Watched City of Sadness (1989) by Hou Hsiao Hsien today. It's a 2 hr 38 min film about the life in Taiwan after the Japanese Occupation and the influx of migrants from Mainland China. The story revolves around a family who has triad connections with gangsters and the repercussions that follow after the government reform. This movie is incredibly slow-moving and the people all around me were complaining how boring it is. I dozed off several times for a few seconds as well. It was actually quite torturous to endure this full length movie and i had to rotate my head, shift sitting posture, drink water, occasionally talk to Daryl beside me and stretch my legs to keep myself awake.

The socio-political film discusses the post war syndrome, the transnational relations and the sufferings that the citizens in that period of time had to go through. It was too serious for mainstream audiences to appreciate the movie and i believe 99% of the two hundred plus students who watched this movie did not like it, including me.

Hou Hsiao Hsien is actually quite acclaimed in the chinese film industry, although this is the first film that i watched coming from the director. The movie can rightfully claim its throne as the most boring film i've ever watched.

Oscar Season

February is always the month when a lot of oscar nominated movies get released here. Among the movies opening this week, there are at least 3 that i wanna watch. Brokeback Mountain is definitely the top choice among all these movies coz it is sweeping the major film awards throughout US. The Constant Gardener by Fernando Meirelles who directed City of God should also be a good movie to watch, with Rachel Weisz a hot contender for Oscar Best Supporting Actress. Syriana, an espionage thriller set in the Middle East that dabbles with oil, terrorism and politics, looks like a very interesting and unconventional movie to watch also. Jarhead, opening this week, seems rather interesting also as it is shot in the perspective of a recruit during the Gulf War adapted from a true life account of Anthony Swofford. Munich directed by Steven Spielberg is about the slaying of 11 Isreali athletes during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich and it studies the Isreali-Palestinian conflict which is all so relevant in the real world.

Will i ever finish watching all these movies?

Luckily got 1 week of mid-term break 2 weeks later. :)

Huo Yuan Jia!

>> Sunday, February 05, 2006

Went to watch Fearless with Jiayun at West Mall today. The movie started off with exhilarating fight scenes and the fight choreography is impressive! Jet Li's execution of movements is fluid yet powerful, swift and experienced. Cut to thirty years ago, we travel back in time to see the making of the martial arts expert, Huo Yuan Jia.

After a humiliating defeat during his childhood, he vowed never to be beaten by any opponent again. He grew up to be a fine practitioner of martial arts and his fighting scorecard was unrivaled.

This movie is basically a story of a man who erred and learnt from his past mistakes. Simple it might be but it is effective in bringing out the meaning behind his story which is also deeply philosophical. Jet Li brings out Huo Yuan Jia's character very well and it is definitely the first film which i thought Jet Li acted exceptionally well. Too bad it is Jet Li's final martial arts film, too bad.

Humans are flawed, even heros like Huo Yuan Jia commit mistakes. What is most important is that we learn from our mistakes and make sure that we never do anything which we will regret for life. Fearless is a life journey of a man who is willing to change and be a better man, not only for himself but for other people as well. The film actually does not support violence, it promotes civility, respect and honour instead.

Everyone should watch this film for its educational message behind this movie. A movie with high entertainment value with an engaging and moving story to boost. Nowadays, with all those fighting movies with so many special effects , Fearless is a rare fighting extravaganza with little computer alterations. Highly recommended!

River Hongbao + Chingay

Met up with my jc gang at Esplanade and we had our dinner at Marina Square. The fireworks display was at 9.30 pm and we gathered at the balcony of the food court to view it. The fireworks were more than i expected and the display lasted between 2 to 3 minutes.

There is a fireworks display daily at 9.30 pm until next tue. We then headed to River Hongbao at the open patch of land across the road from Esplanade.

Coincidentally, Chingay floats were parked near River Hongbao and we took several photos with the floats.

There were quite a lot of people at River Hongbao and we walked around finding good spots to take pictures. There are quite a lot of food and games stalls as well as the traditional zodiac animals exhibits and a performance stage.

We took quite a lot of photos together and we left slightly before midnight to have our supper at AMK. Along the way, we turned into the amk carpark beside NTUC and discovered the all the Chingay floats there! Edwin, Gs and i decided to take more photos with the floats.

We climbed up some of the floats and used Edwin's tripod to take the photos. It was quite interesting to get up close and personal with these huge floats. After spending half an hour snapping pictures, we got back to having supper as Terence and his gf were waiting for us.

Got back home at 2 am and i have still many tutorials waiting to be done. :(

Busy!

>> Saturday, February 04, 2006

Next thursday is the date of my performance and there was a rehearsal yesterday in the evening. After having my lessons from 8.30 am to 5 pm yesterday, i went for my rehearsal at 7 pm which ended at 9 pm. I was really very tired from the lack of rest and the mental exhaustion from the lessons.

My duet with a fellow cca member was cancelled as we did not sing matching keys together and that her voice was not really suitable for the song, A Whole New World. Huiqi then decided that i should sing Love, Me by Collin Raye instead. I think i've only heard the song once or twice before but i agreed since the song was easier to play using guitar and i did not have any other songs in mind.

After my lessons today, i spent 20 minutes practising the song but it's hard to grasp the tune in the beginning due to the many variations of singing style for each sentence. Went for my cca activity next and we were taught how to sing the song "Ai Shi Ni Yan Li De Yi Shou Qing Ge", a ballad remake by Guo Mei Mei and the original singer is Ke Gui Min, a local singer cum songwriter.

There was an unofficial rehearsal after our geyong activity and i rehearsed the song with my guitarist. The first time was really bad as i did not grasp the variations in tune for some lines properly. Luckily, with guidance from Fuli, i gradually fixed some of the problems that i faced while learning the song.

I've been repeating the song in my computer for hours already and i still haven't memorised every word of the lyrics yet.

There is going to be another rehearsal this sunday night! I better perfect my song unless i want to forget my lyrics during the actual performance.

Watched Ju Dou by Zhang Yimou for my elective today. It's a film about love between 2 people that was not meant to be. It is refreshing to see Gong Li in her twenties and her acting was quite good.

Spending

Woke up at 3.45 pm today as i slept at 5 am the night before. Since i did not have anything on today, i went for a shopping spree as i needed to buy quite a lot of things.

Went to Lot 1 as i wanted to get a new pair of spectacles. The only spectacles shop open was Optical 88 and i did not have any other choices. There is an ongoing promotion which reduces the price of the spectacle frame by 30%. After choosing, wearing, choosing and wearing, i finally made my choice after trying around 30 pairs of glasses. The optician serving me must be cursing me in her mind coz i took more than 1 hour to decide the frame i wanted. It's a Titus frame glasses which costs $188 before discount. The amount after discount is $131 and including $60 for the lens add up to $191. The price for changing the broken lens of my old frameless specs costs another $30.

I can only get my spectacles during 14-16 Feb, which is around 2 weeks later. I should have told them that i need the new spectacles desperately.

Went shopping for toiletries & magazines and spent another $30. I went Courts Bukit Timah after that to look for a cd boom box as my previous player had a cd cover which spoilt after using for many years. Went to check out the computer desktop deals as well. Did not buy anything in the end as i figured i should buy a 2 speakers for my dvd player instead.

On my way back home, i spent another $30 on ice-cream, fruit juice, canned food, instant noodles and cereals.

Grand total = ~$280

With more disposable income, i don't really feel the pain from my wallet.
