Aero Part 2

>> Monday, May 30, 2005

I'm gonna have a tough life in NTU when i start school. Checked the syllabus and i'll be studying mathematics, physics, economics, computing, chemistry, material science, life science, biomolecular engineering, biology, lab work and effective communication in just year 1. I think it's the same for other engineering courses but they are still a lot. Cannot slack liao, sian...... :(

"For male applicants who have already been reserved a course in NTU, we have written to them to opt for change of course (subject to their academic performance whether change is approved)." Extracted from NTU's website. That means there are only guys in the course? Luckily i should be staying in hostel, or else i'll be a monk for 4 years. After 2 years and 2 months of army life, i guess my future course is similar in certain aspects. Die, people might think that i'm desperate but i'm really not lar. Just surprised that they only sent the application forms to males.

Hung out with my jc mates as usual on sat and worked for a few hours on sun. Went for the 2nd free ktv session with Ks in the morning and watched Madagascar with Yining in the afternoon. The movie is hilarous and entertaining but the duration is too short (80 mins). Completed another household on my way back home. Getting 40 new cases tomorrow.

Shocking News!

>> Saturday, May 28, 2005

If the words are too small for you, here is a bigger picture.

I'm totally lost for words. Never ever expected to get into this supposedly prestigious course. From a 3 years direct honours course to a 4 year bachelor degree course. Good or bad? If i had been chosen in march, i would have been happy about it but my mind is set on accountancy already. My mind is in a whirl. Life is full of uncertainties thats for sure!

Will definitely be staying in hostel due to the packed timetables for engineering courses. Oh no, i was actually looking forward to the rather slack accountancy timetable. Hopefully there will be some girls in the course. There is only an intake of 60 people and hopefully most of them are nice people or else i will have to suffer for 4 years.

I'm still wondering why i got in. Probably someone rejected the place and they chose me instead? I'll never know anyway.

Some people are just............

>> Friday, May 27, 2005

Why does some private houses have spoiled alarms? Since they are rich enough to stay in a private estate, why can't they spend a tiny bit of their money on repairing the alarm? Why does some people not want to answer the door when they see such a handsome guy standing outside? (Joking lar) Are they scared that i'm a wolf in sheep's disguise, trying to sell some stuff or cheat their money? Well, i guess there are many different types of people in the world. People who are cynical of any strangers who visit, people who are fiercely private and people who are kind as to offer me drinks and tissue to wipe my sweat.

Doing my households as usual today until 10 pm. The second last household i visited called the police. Yes, the POLICE! I was ringing and ringing the bell of a semi-detached house since there were definitely people inside the house. However, the person in level 3 refused to come down even after i spoke to her through her level 3 window and correctly identified her name. After waiting for her a few mins, i gave up and left an appointment slip on her gate. Just walking around 100 metres towards the bus stop. I was a bit surprised to see a policeman approach me and ask me what am i doing and stuff like that. He was very polite towards me so i was rather calm and showed him my identification and explained my purpose of going to the households. We had a brief chat before heading to a last household since it was rather late.

Lastly, these are the people who wanna act punk. Police and government are together one, see who win lor. :) Well, some people just like to play hard to get.

Star Wars!

>> Thursday, May 26, 2005

Watched Star Wars with my jc mates tonight. It was kind of sad to see Anakin Skywalker fall to the dark side. Somehow, i felt that i was in his shoes. I guess that's the power of movies. The story contains lots of themes like love, vengence, responsibilities, hatred, temptation and modesty. Not only that, the pieces fit nicely together and the special effects are astounding. Definitely the best prequel compared to episode 1 and 2. Sadly, this is the end of the entire Star Wars series.

Been gradually losing interest in movies nowadays. One of the reasons is definitely due to the price hike of movie prices. Another is probably due to the shortage of good movies recently.

11KM ROUTE MARCH!!!

>> Monday, May 23, 2005

Wa!!!!!! Why? After army's numerous route marches, why am i subjected to this suffering again? Ok, i shouldn't complain anymore or else the stupid guy who lambasted NS guys being whiny and immature is right. But i definitely don't agree with the bigmouth who handles A* scholars.

Too lazy to swim or play basketball with my friends in the morning as i slept at 4 am the day before. Went for work at around 4 pm as i did not complete any household surveys during my busy weekend. Started at bukit timah area, then walked to newton area, then walked to novena area, then walked to balestier area, then walked to whampoa area, then walked back to novena area, then finally went back to newton area. I only covered 12 households in the entire gigantic area and it took me more than 5 hours of my time. Around 70% of my time was spent walking as the households were very far apart.

Furthermore, my luck was really lousy as quite a lot of the households i visited were not around. It is really demoralising to walk so far and get nothing for it. If i don't get properly compensated for my job and i get this type of dispersed households in the future, i will seriously consider saying goodbye to Department of Statistics.

This is the map and the coloured lines represent the route i took. Found the total route distance using Street Directory's route calculator. The total distance i covered is approximately 11122.68 metres! Great job huh? Can exercise while you work. My tolerance is indeed waning.

Jianyu's 21st Birthday

>> Sunday, May 22, 2005

Jianyu's birthday is on the 20th may but he chose to celebrate it on 22th may, today, since tomorrow is a public holiday. Lumpy, lloyd, keng han, liyuan, paul, daryl and i met up at ps yamaha in the afternoon to get an acoustic guitar for jy. Almost the whole platoon is sharing except ks and zy who got their own personal presents.

Lumpy drove us to chalet after that and we started our feast almost immediately. More and more people came and the biggest surprise was when David Fan arrived. The nerdy boy had turned into a hip and funky and guy. He got his ear pierced, his hair dyed and had slimmed down to a better shape. He is working in a bar in chinatown and there were rumours that he is working in a gay bar. Dunno whether it is true or not though. Most of us had never expected him to have an image makeover. Took a picture after our feast with the birthday boy.

We played some card games, chatted about our lives after ord, talked bad things behind Alwin's back as usual and had a walk along pasir ris beach. The cake cutting ceremony was at 9.45 pm and we took some photos as well.

Great to see my good old platoon mates once again.

David's 21st Birthday

>> Saturday, May 21, 2005

Met up with my sec sch gang for David's 21st birthday celebration which we planned for him. Weiming was late as usual while Fuli and i were roaming the orchard area to see what we can get from David. We had planned on getting t-shirts or bag since David looks like that he needs some (oops). Okok, joking only. :) We found quite a nice bag at 77th Street which is selling for only $30. It was below our budget but we bought it since it was worth the price. Got a blackforest cake at Bengawan Solo before he arrived. Celebrated at the usual spot in centrepoint. Took several photos as well.

We were treated to Burger King for dinner after that and were strolling along Orchard road with no purpose as usual. Fuli and i were interested in buying handphones and we spent some time browsing various handphone shops. Had some supper and dessert at ps before heading back home.

Acting!

>> Friday, May 20, 2005

Started off my day doing the horrendously apart households on friday. The distance was not as bad as i expected but the balestier area which i haven't started will be worse. My colleague who was supposed to tag along with me was late and we did only a few households together as i was supposed to meet up with jiekai and his crew at pasir ris.

Did not have time for lunch and after jiekai's family, relatives and neighbours boarded the chartered bus, he began filming the bus scene. The whole movie is almost devoid of dialogue and there is only a lead character and 3 sub-characters. I was too ignorant and lazy to read the script so i don't have a clue what the whole story is about. I was one of the sub-characters as well as lumpy and jiekai's sister. We were wearing blue, red and yellow t-shirts interchangebly during the whole short film. The whole process was quite long and i was really bored when i finished my scenes. I was just sitting on the bus, which was going round and round, waiting for them to finishing shooting.

The bus shoot finished at 7 pm and jk's relatives and neighbours left as they were no longer required. I was famished already and we headed to an industrial area in Ubi for an office shoot. My handphone had run out of battery life and i was in constant worry as the households might contact me to complete the survey. Luckily, jiemin lent her hp to me for some time. We had our packet dinner courtesy of jk's mum before filming. Only the lead actress was supposed to be in the office scenes and lumpy, jiemin and i were almost bored to death. The tv in the conference room saved us though.

Next up was the street scene which started at 10 pm. It was more efficient since it was quite late already and we wanted to wrap things up. Basically, all i did was typing on a laptop, reading a book, getting off the bus and laughing crazily at the camera. After lumpy and i finished our last scene, we got cab money from jk as it was 11.30 pm already and there were no buses back already. Went back tired, hungry and sleepy.

The acting experience was not as good as i expected.

Tough!

>> Thursday, May 19, 2005

Got a list of households today which are not only dispersed over a big area, they are also mostly private estates like condos and bungalows. Sianz...... Don't feel like doing but no choice, gotta earn money! I wanna buy handphone and i have changed my mind on getting 3230.

Decided not to get nokia 3230 anymore as the mp3 player is mono and there are consumer complaints that the phone is laggy and buggy. Setting my mind on the lighter nokia 6230i which is quite new in the market with some better features than 3230. However, only m1 is selling it at the moment at the price of $538. It is definitely over my budget for a handphone and i guess i should be waiting for the price to drop or see if there are any other new and better phones coming out.

Will be acting in jiekai's short film tomorrow as i promised to help him for one day. Hope that it ends soon so that i can work (or else my supervisor will nag at me).

There are 3 new team members joining us today. This basically means more competition for households and lesser pay! Hai..... What to do? I just secretly hope that some of my team members quit soon. Haha.... Conicidentally, one of my new team mate is my seconday school friend and my supervisor has assigned her to tag along with me to show her the ropes. Good luck for her coz my new batch of households is horrendous with the amount of distance that we have to walk. :(

I want new HP!

>> Tuesday, May 17, 2005

Been working for the past 2 nights and got quite a few cases settled. My mobile talktime is going to explode coz of numerous phone interviews i had with the people for my job. My mobile plan does not include free incoming calls and i'm planning to upgrade to a 2 year free incoming calls plan and buying a new handphone as well. I think Nokia 3230 is my final choice after browsing through the list of nokia phones. Must tell me if not good ok? Should be buying quite soon.

After the meeting at LK CC today, i went orchard to buy some stuff since it was along the way to Newton where i had to conduct the household surveys. The trip turned out to be a rather costly one as i noticed some promotions at Watson and Guardian where i bought multi-vitamins, oxy, listerine and some other things. Walked past bossini which was having some discounts as well and bought a nice t-shirt as well. I guess i spend quite a lot when i'm shopping alone. It's more relaxed, without pressure and much more focused on thinking what i want or need. Went into the M1 shop at Taka to take a look at the range of handphones available as well. Tempting..... I almost wanted to buy a new handphone right away. My mini shopping trip turned out to be almost 2 hours long and it was already 6 pm when i started work.

Oh no, I'm going to fritter away the money that i've just earned!

Late Mini Housewarming

>> Sunday, May 15, 2005

My sec sch friends visited my house on sun and they brought a gift as well. It really wasn't necessary but i accepted it anyway. :) Gave them a tour around my house and played several rounds of pool. Singing karaoke was next and we sang most of the popular songs by Jay Chou as the most recent ones i have are only Jay's ktv vcds. Used the computer for quite some time after that as Weiming introduced us to a quiz website, OkCupid, which have a lot of interesting quizzes which are free. Each of us took turns to do some of the interesting ones. They left after having their dinner at around 8.30 pm. I unwrapped the present and found that they have given me a coffee maker.

Thanks a lot for the gift, if any of you are reading this. :)

PS: Cathay Cineleisure Orchard will be increasing the movie prices as well with effect from 18 May. Cathay Causeway Point will remain the usual price (weekday $6.50 & weekend $8.50) and it is the cheapest theatre in Singapore (other than golden, empress and princess which i'm not sure what is the price). Started my day by calling the households for the survey. Visited a few condos and private apartments before meeting up with my jc gang to buy weilin's birthday present. I had asked her what she liked for a present and we decided to get a sweater for her. After walking around in pacific plaza and far east plaza, we decided on a $239 limited edition adidas sweater for her. Really quite expensive for a sweater but we got it since quite a lot of people are sharing and it is one of the better designs there.

We chanced upon Anabelle at far east and jim fetched her to the condo as she is going to weilin's birthday party as well. The venue is quite nice since it is at the condo's clubhouse. The food and cake were also not bad. Took some photos there as well.

My supervisor will be giving me a record number of households tomorrow. After the meagre amount of households i got from the past 3 batches, i think i will be more occupied with my work after fri. Someone from my group is quitting and my supervisor is passing all her incomplete cases to me. My numerous requests for more households had finally been answered. I guess i do not need a concurrent part time job anymore.

I just hope that i don't get too many vacant households. Only worked for around 3 hrs today and did not work yesterday. Went to watch Kingdom of Heaven with my jc mates at cineleisure. Who wants to watch movies on weekends nowadays? At the price of $9.50 (other than cathay), it is really an exorbitant price to pay even for a movie fanatic like me. Lots of blockbusters are heading to theatres from may to july though. Watch out for Star Wars: Episode 3 which is opening 19 May, Batman Begins, War of The Worlds, Fantastic 4, Mr & Mrs Smith and some others.

Friend antiques
Your wise quote is: "The best antiques are old

Your buds is the source of your happiness

It was kind of wishful thinking on my part that i could earn that much for my job but i have realised that much on it depends on luck. The more vacant households on your list, the less you are paid coz you are not able to do surveys since the unit is vacant. So back to my prowl for part-time jobs this time round.

Going for job interviews tomorrow as telemarketer with JJ. I'm going to set the record for doing or changing the most jobs within the span of only a few months. :)

Spent these past 2 days at home as we had a family gathering on sun. My sis and i had bought mum 2 bottles of perfume from the body shop. Played pool with my relatives for some time while the rest were playing mahjong.

Originally planned to swim at bukit batok swimming complex today but woke up too late and decided to suntan on my rooftop instead. Did not work today since i had only 3 households left which are hard to deal with. Hope to get a part time job soon.

Inexperience

>> Saturday, May 07, 2005

Went for work in the morning and got only 1 submitted case. Met up with my jc gang again after that to resolve the problems of the malaysia trip. We went to the travel agency which we booked the trip as one of our classmates, ade, decided not to go. After some discussion with the staff, we could not persuade him to cancel her trip as we had already paid the full payment. So the best solution is to find a replacement. We were thinking of changing the trip to include more places like Cameron and Genting Highlands since the current package we have is 4D 3N at KL only and we might get bored there. However, there is an amendment charge and some other extra charge if we decide to change.

Tips for minimising the problems arising from organising an overseas trip:
1) Do not book so early (1 month before the trip is sufficient)
2) Go to the travel agencies which pay the deposit first instead of full payment immediately.
3) Call everyone to have a last confirmation before booking the trip.
4) Decide on the best package before booking.

We did not do all these and had to settle the various problems. Had lunch at the big hawker centre after the discussion. Went east coast park to cycle after some aimless walking and shopping at chinatown since we do not have any other ideas on what to do. It is quite cheap at the rate of $4 for 2 hours. Started from near the 10 km turning point (my unit's running route) all the way to Safra Resort about 2 km after the start point. So we cycled for about 14 km and were all quite tired with our painful asses.

Had supper at the famous Bedok hawker centre with the "rou chuo mian" after that. Mothers' Day is tomorrow!

Dead (almost)

>> Thursday, May 05, 2005

Went to my ex-company InCall Systems to get my last month's pay which is only a mere $145.25 since i've worked only 2.5 days there in april. Went to Alexandra hawker centre to have lunch with kp, terence plus some of their colleagues. Many of my ex-colleagues are already not working there anymore. And my dumbbell is still in the office! Luckily, terence offered to bring my dumbbell back to his house so that i can get from him next time.

Went to DBS branch in Queensway to get the cash from the cheque and headed to work immediately. Condos are hard to get through! I had to convince the security guards that i'm not those salesmen or suspicious characters and i have to talk to the management committee after getting through the gates. There is quite a lot of red tape and a lot of time is wasted.

I was heading to and fro from this particular condo, to that particular condo (classified info), and back again as i had made appointments with certain households. The red tape also wasted quite a lot of my time at another condo i have to visit. I don't even have time for dinner and i did all the way til 10.30 pm!!!! I was famished and exhausted but i just want to complete more households today since i haven't been working much the past few days.

Completed 6 surveys with another 1 almost done. Still got quite a lot of work to be done. Endured headache, rain, abrasion, exhaustion and hunger today. Went back home in a zombie state.

Movie prices have increased! (except Cathay cineplexes)

>> Wednesday, May 04, 2005

Tuesday, was late for an early meeting at LK CC for 40 mins. In the afternoon, i was late for 35 mins when i met up with Chris for a movie. Overslept for a nap as i set my hp alarm clock to 03.15, instead of 15.15. Stupid right? Guess i was too tired as i slept only 5 hours the night before. Went Great World City to watch Millions.

Went for a ktv session with Ks in the morning. Used our free ktv vouchers that we got from the new JJ cd. Met up with Hc and Kr after that as we planned to watch Sahara. Actually i was supposed to meet my supervisor in the afternoon to get new household records but i delayed it until 8 pm. Got 2 completed surveys through the phone today and i saved the trouble of visiting them. 21 new households to go! Should be working hard to get them tomorrow.

Feels like i'm not working at all. I only need to work a few days a week. Great for a slacker like me. :)

Birthday Celebration

>> Monday, May 02, 2005

Monday, met up with my supervisor at commonwealth to sync my PDA for a short while before going back to survey the households i'm left with. I was only left with 2 cases, one which the resident who is determined not to open the door after my 10 mins of knocking and calling, and another person who works shifts almost everyday and hard to contact. Did not get any completed surveys after 45 mins. Left for douby ghaut to meet up with my army mates for sgt Weijie's birthday celebration.

Quite a lot were late and we spent half an hour waiting for them. Had our dinner at yoshinoya and we were considering ktv or movie next. Many of us did not like the price of singing ktv at night (around $20 per pax) and we decided to catch a movie instead. However, some of the movies we are interested in are too late and the earlier ones like Creep (i did not want to watch) and Divergence (I've watched already) were not selected as well. Thus we decided on playing pool at park lane. We secretly discussed the celebration plan, "recce"ed the area and decided on the cakes in TCC at Paradis centre beside park lane. By the way, the snookerium there sucks coz the old pool tables are all 7 or 8 feet and the low quality cues have many different lengths with a smaller tip. I was quite stressed when playing pool as the rest expected me to be quite good since i got a pool table at home. Didn't play very well as a result. Embarrassing lor! Cannot help it lar, "wo shi ai mian zi de".

Zhangyi and Keng Han excused themselves from the snookerium as they went to TCC to prepare the cakes, candles and stuff. Jianyu then told Weijie he's sian of playing pool already and we left, bringing the birthday boy to TCC for a surprise. Innovative and sweet, ain't we? Took a few photos as well.

Great to see my good old army mates once again.

Labour Day!

>> Sunday, May 01, 2005

Sunday, went singtel callcentre to have our PDAs tweaked. It was quite fast and my team went off at 10 am. I was taking my time going to somerset as i was meeting my sec sch friends at 11 am for ktv to welcome Fuli back from Taiwan after 32 days of outfield exercise, ATEC and R&R. I booked the ktv room first and was disappointed to hear that we can only sing up to 1.30 pm if we did not reserve rooms beforehand. Flipping through the song selection, i found 3 new jj ktvs, no new david tao or penny's ktvs and 2 new fir ktvs. It was a 2nd disappointment as i had not sang ktv for quite a while and there are only a few new songs.

Luckily, our food arrived at around 1.30 pm and we deliberately ate very slowly so that we can extend our time there. It worked and we sang until 2.20 pm. Bernard had to leave as he was helping his sis on her work. The rest of us were clueless on what to do and we were roaming around aimlessly as usual. David wanted to play pool but i was not interested as i already have a pool table at home. So the 3 of us were walking and talking, and i suggested having a teabreak at the shophouses along Killiney Road. There were quite a lot of people in Killiney Kopitiam and we checked out other eateries but were not interested.

So back to walking and talking until we went centrepoint and got ourselves seats by the escalator in the upper levels as we were rather tired from all the walking. Went Starhub centre for dinner subsequently. I left after that as i was meeting my parents and sis at Pasir ris mrt for my cousin's birthday chalet at NTUC costa sands. There were lots of food there and my cousin's husband was busy bbqing lots of food for us. We had our stomachs filled to the brim and i was listening to my uncles, aunties and parents talking about the economy, casino, my slowcoach maid, etc. Quite interesting actually, although i didn't really participate in the conversations. Cutting of the cake was next and the cake was quite delicious. I asked my cousin where she bought it and she told me she got it from Angie The Choice. Should be getting mine there in a few months time. :)

Many of them played blackjack after that including my mum and sis as we always gamble during family gatherings. I was watching them gamble and the tv until around 11.30 pm when most of us left. Totally exhausted as i had spent the whole day outside from early morning til midnight. A labourous day indeed.
